Theresa Riedel

Looking up: Split vs. NYC

Theresa Riedel, born in Germany, is a New York City based contemporary art photographer. In this project she focuses her camera on urban architecture in two different cities, Split, Croatia and Manhattan, New York City. These two cities could not be any more different. The architecture of soviet-occupied Eastern Europe in the 1970s seeks to impress by design and its sheer immensity and brutality, expressing anachronism. In New York City we see the grandiosity of beautiful designed yet intimidating buildings with great contrast to the blue sky. This Juxtaposition asserts a sense of social separation, longing and loneliness. With focusing on creating these compositions and a minimalistic approach to her subject, the photographer brings our attention to an experience from that of Croatia, offering an alternative atmosphere for the keenly attentive viewer to consider.
